Island de Noirmoutier

Today we drove out to the Atlantic coast. We went to an amazing island that can be accessed by a 6 mile long road that is only above water 3 hours a day. You can see it here, above. The thing that looks like a look out structure is for people who go clamming out and stay too long and can't outrun the tide - it's much too fast. We must have seen up to 500 people out on the flats looking for clams at low tide.

The passage is called "Passage du Gois" and if you want to check the low tide look here: http://www.passagedugois.com/

This is what the sand flats look like, but it's difficult to see all the people in the distance here. The island town was just beautiful - a bit touristy, but very cool.

This is the city hall.
We had mussels and french fries and pizzas here - and they tasted great.

Camille had a fun time on the merry go round at the farmers market there.

This is the Canal of the town when we arrived - you can see the boats are sitting in the mud.
Boats in the mud. This is only 1.5 hours later. the water can in so fast it was staggering. We saw the tide rise about in inch a minute it seemed. It was just nuts. I've never seen the tide raise so fast.

We later drive out to the beach at the northern most tip of the island.

And we visited the Salt farms there too and purchased some salt for our family and friends. This area is famous for it's salt farming.

Under this tarp is a giant pile of sea salt.
Here is another cool French car we can't get in America. It's a Citroen diesel four door, small car with lots of space inside and great mileage.
